Does Ego Depletion Elicit Stronger Cues of Deception?

چکیده

Abstract Lying is cognitively demanding and presumably requires self-regulation. According to ego depletion theory, a task that self-regulation should therefore impair an individual’s ability tell convincing lie in later task. Consequently, it was hypothesized manipulation of would enhance behavioral differences between liars truth-tellers. To manipulate depletion, participants worked (vs. did not work) on which they had suppress dominant responses while copying text. Subsequently, talked simulated job interview about previously held held). In the sample 164 participants, there no evidence support hypothesis; expected Ego Depletion x Veracity interaction significant for any 15 cues coded videotaped interviews. Although main effect at multivariate level first two parts interview, none univariate effects reached significance corrected multiple testing. Bayesian analyses rendered moderate strong favor null hypothesis. Possible implications results are discussed, also those related theory.

Ego-depletion 1 Ego-depletion: Theory and Evidence

Self-control all too often fails. Despite people‟s best intentions and considerable negative outcomes, people often find themselves at the losing end of resisting temptation, combating urges, and changing their behavior. One reason for these failures may be that exerting selfcontrol depletes a limited resource (ego-depletion) that is necessary for the success of selfcontrol. Hence, after exerti...

Ego Depletion Impairs Implicit Learning

Implicit skill learning occurs incidentally and without conscious awareness of what is learned. However, the rate and effectiveness of learning may still be affected by decreased availability of central processing resources. Dual-task experiments have generally found impairments in implicit learning, however, these studies have also shown that certain characteristics of the secondary task (e.g....

EGO DEPLETION DEBATE 1 Is Ego Depletion Real? An Analysis of Arguments

An influential line of research suggests that initial bouts of self-control increase the susceptibility to self-control failure (ego depletion effect). Despite seemingly abundant evidence, some researchers have suggested that evidence for ego depletion was the sole result of publication bias and p-hacking, with the true effect being indistinguishable from zero. Here, we examine (a) whether the ...
